Loch Norman Highland Games – April 18-19, 2026 – Presented by McIntosh Law Firm

Scottish Hammer Throw

Unlike the Olympic hammer throw (where the athlete spins in circles), the Scottish version requires the feet to remain fixed on the ground.

  • The Implement: A lead or iron ball attached to a long, stiff handle made of wood, bamboo, or PVC.

  • The Technique: The athlete stands with their back to the field, whizzing the hammer around their head to build centrifugal force before releasing it over their shoulder for distance. Many athletes wear “hammer boots” with blades on the soles to anchor themselves into the turf.
